Images of Urumqi

If you look on a map of China, Urumqi would seem to be very much a frontier city in the west, and it is in many ways.

It is the main route into Kazakhstan and Siberia. Many Chinese from other parts of China think that Urumqi is a dangerous city full of wild people.

A Camel in the City??

Believe it or not the owner of this camel wanted money just to take a photo of his stinking camel. I just moved back amongst the crowd and shot away.

So I took Two

A United Nations Ethnic Mix

A mix of Uyghers, Kazaks and Han Chinese. Urumqi is a melting pot of peoples. You will also see Russians, Uzbeks' and Tajiks - they all look different too, with the Uyghers looking very much like Arabs.

Uygher Musicians

Uygher Dancer

This guy was a real showman - he came right up close to me and danced away as I was using the video option on my camera and danced away for some time.

Listening to the music and watching this guy you could have been easily mistaken for thinking you were in a Middle Eastern country and not China.

Uygher Market Area

This is the new market building, full of all sorts of interesting things - we went there a couple of times and I bought a few items of interest.

Uygher Part of Town

I wanted to get a photo of some Uygher women with the full face coverings, but was told to be very careful about it as ususally those women are always accompanied by their men folk. So I stood by some policemen for a while, but none came along - so I took this one before the cops moved along.

Street Vendor Selling Dried Fruits and Nuts

A shame the colours didn't come out that well - it was a colourful array of dried fruits, nuts and seeds.

Fossilised Tree Trunks

Meteorite

This is the world's 3rd largest meteorite ever found in one piece. You would be happy about this one falling thru the roof of your house. Just a shame about the grafitti on it.

Mummy

One of the dozen mummies in a tiny museum here. They are of European descent and are around 4,000 years old.

Dinner with Jonathan and friends.

This was at a Brazillian Restaurant - great food - all you can eat for 10NZD - and we did.
